Kadikoy or Uskudar
Kadikoy is the livelier pick. Its market streets, meyhanes and third-wave cafes make it a destination in its own right, and the Moda shoreline gives you sunset walks locals actually use. Budget hotels and aparts cluster within ten minutes of the ferry piers and Rihtim area. Uskudar, one stop north by Marmaray, is quieter and more conservative, with waterfront mosque views toward the Old City skyline and generally plainer, cheaper hotels. Both work; Kadikoy suits first visits, Uskudar suits early risers who want calm nights.
The Commute, Honestly
From Kadikoy's piers, city ferries cross to Eminonu and Karakoy in roughly 20 to 30 minutes; schedules and lines are published by the city operator at Sehir Hatlari. The Marmaray rail tunnel is the all-weather backup: board at Ayrilik Cesmesi (one M4 metro stop from Kadikoy center) or Uskudar and you are at Sirkeci, at the foot of the Old City, in minutes. The ride across the Bosphorus is the best free-with-transit-card view in Istanbul. Count 35 to 50 minutes door-to-door from a Kadikoy hotel to the Hagia Sophia square, and plan around the last ferries if you stay out late on the European side.

Micro-Areas Worth Knowing
Within Kadikoy, three pockets behave differently. The Rihtim and market grid near the piers is the practical base: hotels here cut the commute to its minimum and put the food streets at your door. Moda, up the hill to the south, is calmer and more residential, with guesthouses and aparts over cafes; expect a 10 to 15 minute walk down to the ferries. Yeldegirmeni, between Kadikoy and the Ayrilik Cesmesi Marmaray stop, is the mural-covered budget quarter where small aparts price lowest, and its position makes it the single best-connected cheap base on the Asian side.

- Repeat visitors who have already done the Sultanahmet checklist and want to eat and live like the city does.
- Travelers flying in or out of Sabiha Gokcen, especially with early departures.
- Anyone priced out of Sultanahmet or Taksim in high season, since Asian side rates swing less violently than the tourist core.
First-time visitors on a two or three day trip should still weigh the commute cost: if every waking hour is planned for the Old City, a cheap room in Laleli may save more time than the Asian side saves money.
