Airport to City on a Budget, Step by Step
The cheapest way from Istanbul Airport (IST) to the center is the M11 metro, and from Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) it is the M4 metro plus Marmaray. Both need an Istanbulkart or a contactless-supported card and both stop running around midnight. The routes below are written for the budget hotel zones this site covers: Sultanahmet, Laleli and Aksaray, Taksim and the Asian side.
First: Get an Istanbulkart
Istanbul's transit card works on metro, tram, Marmaray, bus and ferry, and it is sold at machines in both airports' rail and metro entrances. IST to the Old City (Sultanahmet, Laleli, Sirkeci)
- Follow the metro signs from arrivals down to the M11 station inside the airport. Trains run roughly every 8 to 10 minutes between about 06:00 and midnight, per the official airport transport page.
- Ride the M11 to Gayrettepe, about 30 minutes end to end for this segment; Rome2Rio listed the metro fare at 42 TRY at the time of writing (route listing).
- Transfer at Gayrettepe to the M2 metro. The connecting walk inside the station complex takes around 10 minutes; travelers on Tripadvisor's M11 reviews consistently flag it, so do not plan a tight connection.
- Take the M2 south. For Laleli and Aksaray hotels, exit at Vezneciler and walk downhill. For Sultanahmet and Sirkeci, stay on to Yenikapi, transfer to Marmaray for one stop to Sirkeci, then walk or ride the T1 tram up to Sultanahmet.
- Total journey: plan around 75 to 90 minutes door to door with transfers and luggage.
IST to Taksim
- Take the M11 to Gayrettepe as above.
- Transfer to the M2 and ride four stops south to Taksim. Hotels in Talimhane are a short walk from the square exit.
- Alternative: the Havaist airport coach network runs 11 routes from IST into the city, including Taksim, per the airport's transportation overview. Recent traveler reports on Tripadvisor put the fare at 355 TRY per person; fares are revised regularly, so confirm on hava.ist before traveling. The bus wins when you have heavy luggage and your stop is near the hotel; the metro wins on price and traffic immunity.
Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) to the City
- Follow the M signs to the M4 metro station under the terminal. The M4 runs from the airport toward Kadikoy, and connects to Marmaray at Ayrilik Cesmesi, as described on the airport's official metro page.
- For Kadikoy hotels: ride the M4 to the end of the line at Kadikoy. Done, no crossing needed.
- For the Old City: change at Ayrilik Cesmesi to Marmaray heading toward Europe and exit at Sirkeci for Sultanahmet or Yenikapi for Laleli.

When a Private Transfer Is the Budget Option
